A letter from Annette
Dear students,
I hope you had a nice winter break and are feeling ready to tackle the rest of the year,
Newly arrived students
In the first week of February 2021 we received 160 applications from students of all faculties for the 2021 edition of Honours Governance and Global Affairs. Because we have 80 places per year we had to exclude a total of 80 students by lottery. This was a sad process, because most of the applying students had good grades and showed strong motivation.
However we are excited about the result of the admission process, being a group of students coming from a high diversity of studies:
38 places in FGGA: we could place 23 students from Security Studies, 9 students from Public Administration, 3 students from LUC, 3 students from Urban Studies.
42 places outside FGGA: we could place 17 students from IRO, 9 students from International Studies, 2 students psychology, 2 students Bio-pharmacy, 2 students History, 2 students Life-science, 2 student Antropology, 1 student Archeology, 1 student Korean studies, 1 student Chinese and 1 Russian Studies, 2 students Molecular Science.
In the coming two weeks the newly arrived students will start the Honours course GGA of their choice.
Also in the coming two weeks I will invite the BA1 students to sign up via Doodle for a personal development/study plan conversation and for the NATO game. The latter is the introduction game for the BA1 students. The game is developed by BA2 students and also will be moderated by them. The game will be played with 13-15 students per game in the period February – April 2021.
Activities for students BA2 and BA3
One of our student ambassadors has developed an Escape Room! In March I will send the students of BA2 and BA3 a Doodle to sign up for one of the sessions.
Forming support groups of students
In February I will form support groups of first year students and add to each group two mentors. One from the second and one from the third year.
I also will form support groups of second and third year students.
If you have questions you can e-mail me on a.j.e.righolt@fgga.leidenuniv.nl.
For now, I want to wish you an inspired start of the new semester! Stay strong and take care!
With kind regards,
Annette Righolt

Personal project
Honours student Lauren Griesedieck completed her personal project this summer where she researched the perpetuation of racism in the US through its institutions. She accompanied her research with an article and transcribed her findings into an infographic.
We really encourage you to read her article here and check her great infographic! We would like to congratulate Lauren Griesedieck for completing such an important research, it is a great example of what can be done with a personal project!
